The suffering of those soldiers who returned with physical and psychological damage both before and after the war were a constant reminder in communities across Australia of the cost of war.  High priority was given to medical and rehabilitation services, and a pension scheme.  Numerous programs and charitable initiatives were established; vocational education courses; and loans to help establish homes, businesses, or a life on the land.

Paul Byrant, Senior Vice President of the City of Fairfield R.S.L. Sub-Branch, will give a descriptive insight into what was done for our post war Diggers.

Talk: Impact on the Homefront

Venue: Liverpool Regional Museum

Date: Saturday 3 November 2018

Time: 1.30 pm - 3 pm

As a professional historian, Dr Naomi Parry was the lead author of the book "New South Wales and The Great War", launched in 1916 as the official publication of the NSW Centenary of ANZAC Committee.

Dr Parry's book revealed the impact of war on the ordinary citizens of New South Wales, in our cities, towns and rural communities.  It had a particular focus on domestic violence in 1917.  She will reflect on NSW's and Liverpool's contribution in the war effort and how its people managed the losses and tragic impact of World War I.

Venue: Liverpool Regional Museum

Date: Saturday 10 November 2018

Time: 10.30 am – noon

Image credit: Locomotive crossing the George’s River Military Rail Bridge Courtesy of the Australian Railway Historical Society NSW.

A century ago there was a major rail link from Liverpool into the Liverpool Field Training Area to service the Liverpool Army Camp, Holdsworthy Internment Camp, Army Service Corps, ANZAC Rifle Range, Remount Deport and Moorebank Stores.  It was Commonwealth-owned and run by the NSW State Government.

Noted railway historian and author of numerous books on our railway system over the years, John Oakes, will talk about this vital transport link of the war years where today there is little evidence that it ever existed.

There were many unique ways that funds were raised to help Australian troops overseas and one of the most unusual was through income generated by the sale of button fund badges and tinnies.

Passionate badge collectors and researchers Nick Pezikian and David Andersen will enlighten listeners about this little-known World War 1 form of patriotism.  They will also launch a book on this day.

Peace comes to Liverpool
Talk: Behind the Wires

Venue: Liverpool Regional Museum

Date: Saturday 24 November 2018

Time: 10.30 am – noon

Image credit: Holsworthy Internment Camp 1915, Paul Dubotzki Collection, Germany.

The advent of World War 1 saw a change in the attitude by the Australian Government particularly to German and Austro-Hungarian people residing here despite the fact that many had lived here for several years and many were British subjects.  There were nearly 7000 interned in World War 1 and Holdsworthy at Liverpool was the largest camp in the country.

Mike Wohltmann is a noted historian and author on this subject.  His book "A Future Unlived" gives a profound insight into why internees were detained and was it justified.
