The suffering of those soldiers who returned with physical and psychological damage both before and after the war were a constant reminder in communities across Australia of the cost of war. High priority was given to medical and rehabilitation services, and a pension scheme. Numerous programs and charitable initiatives were established; vocational education courses; and loans to help establish homes, businesses, or a life on the land.
Paul Byrant, Senior Vice President of the City of Fairfield R.S.L. Sub-Branch, will give a descriptive insight into what was done for our post war Diggers.

The advent of World War 1 saw a change in the attitude by the Australian Government particularly to German and Austro-Hungarian people residing here despite the fact that many had lived here for several years and many were British subjects. There were nearly 7000 interned in World War 1 and Holdsworthy at Liverpool was the largest camp in the country.
