Some of the most common questions asked at the Liverpool Regional Family History Centre and informative answers.


How can the Liverpool Regional Family History Centre help with my family history research?

Staff can assist researchers to access and use the library's resources. Volunteers from the Liverpool Genealogy Society will also assist visitors to the Centre with their family history research.


Can I join the Library when I visit the Family History Centre?

Yes, membership of the Liverpool City Library is available at the Liverpool Regional Family History Centre. You just need to show proof of your name and address, for example, a Drivers Licence.


What records do you have for researchers to use?

There are many resources available for researchers including, Birth Death and Marriage Records, Immigration, Convict, Census and Musters and more.


How do I start my research?

The first and most important rule of genealogy is to start with yourself and work backward. Family documents, photos, and other sources can provide you with many valuable clues to get you started on your genealogy adventure. They may include the names of ancestors, dates, and places for births, marriages and deaths, and insight into what life was like for your ancestors.

Do I have to pay to research at the Liverpool Regional Family History Centre?

The only cost is 25c per A4 page for black and white printing and 50c per A4 page for colour printing.

All visitors to the Centre will need a current Liverpool City Library Card to access the databases on all the computers and printer within the Centre. Visitors to the Centre will also need to upload money onto their card before visiting. There are NO available machines for uploading money to your card at the Centre, and machines locations are available within all the Liverpool City Library branches in the Liverpool City Council area.

AUSTRALIA - ADELAIDE CITY COUNCIL ARCHIVES
Explore the archival holdings of the City of Adelaide using this innovative Web-based system that gives you on-line access to those record items that have been catalogued in the Archives' electronic database.

AUSTRALIA - CITY OF SYDNEY ARCHIVES
The City of Sydney Archives is the City's corporate memory with more than 15,000 shelf-metres of archival records, including large numbers of plans and photographs. More material is added to this collection every year.

AUSTRALIA - MARRICKVILLE COUNCIL ARCHIVES
Records held are from the former St Peters Municipal Council (1871 – 1948) and Petersham Municipal Council (1872 – 1948). These two Councils merged with Marrickville Council in 1949 after the introduction of the Local Government (Areas) Act of 1948.

PANDORA - Australia's Web Archive was established by the National Library of Australia in 1996 and is a growing collection of online publications. Pandora has collaboration with nine other Australian libraries and other collecting agencies with the responsibilities for collecting and preserving Australian documentary heritage.

AUSTRALIA - UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE ARCHIVES
The University Archives within the Auchmuty Library at the University of Newcastle holds some 2,000 shelf metres of priceless manuscript material dating from the year 1826. Archival collections contain a great wealth of untapped material, and some individual collections have extraordinary range and depth for research.

AUSTRALIA - VICTORIA - PUBLIC RECORD OFFICE
The Public Record Office Victoria is the archives of the State Government of Victoria, holding records from the European settlement of Port Phillip district in the mid-1830s to today.

The State Records Office contains numerous records that are of great value to family historians, such as passenger lists, convict records, court case files, wills and more.

AUSTRIA - AUSTRIAN STATE ARCHIVES

CANADA - McMASTER UNIVERSITY LIBRARY DIGITAL ARCHIVE
McMaster University Library Digital Archive is part of the infrastructure supporting the entire McMaster University community in describing, making available, and most importantly preserving digital objects. The Library provides access to digitized special library collections, mostly from maps, research collections, and general book collection.

DANISH - NATIONAL ARCHIVES
The Danish National Archives is working to digitise its collections. Click on English translation to view the digital version of parish records, census list etc. More records will be added to the site as the digitisation progresses.

ENGLAND - BRITISH LIBRARY - INDIA OFFICE
British and European people in India pre -1950. The India Office Records are the repository of the archives of the East India Company (1600-1858), the Board of Control or Board of Commissioners for the Affairs of India (1784-1858), the India Office (1858-1947), the Burma Office (1937-1948), and a number of related British agencies overseas.

ENGLAND - DORSET HISTORY CENTRE
The Dorset History Centre is the archives service and local studies library for Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole. The centre houses Dorset's local archives from council records to personal collections.

ENGLAND - ESSEX RECORDS OFFICE

EUROPE - CROATIAN STATE ARCHIVES
Croatian State Archives collects, preserves and makes use of archival material of the central institutions of the Croatian state, prominent individuals, families and organisations. The archive provides support to national authorities in the protection of documents and files held by creators. 

EUROPE - CZECH REPUBLIC ARCHIVES
The data with records of all archival collections and stored in the archives of the Czech Republic.

EUROPE - EUROPEANA COLLECTIONS
Europeana works with thousands of European archives, libraries and museums to share cultural heritage for enjoyment, education and research. Europeana Collections provides access to over 50 million digitised items – books, music, artworks, newspapers and more.

FRANCE - CANADA - NEW FRANCE ARCHIVES
The documents in this New France Archives – Archives de la Nouvelle France database, dates mainly from the early 16th century until the Treaty of Paris in 1763, including some documents after this period.

FINLAND - FINNA.FI
Finna.fi provides free access to material from Finnish museums, libraries and archives. The site is your one stop destination for searching the freely available material provided by the partner organisations. You can browse and read material available on the web.

GERMANY - GERMAN NATIONAL ARCHIVES
The Federal Archives have the legal responsibility of permanently preserving the federal archival documents and making them available for use. This includes documents, files, papers, cartographic records, pictures, posters, films, sound recordings and machine-readable data. 1495 - 1990.

HOLLAND - DUTCH ARCHIVES
Welcome to archieven.nl, where you can search hundreds of kilometres of archival material. You will find here: 86 participating organisations more than 51000 archives and collections with over 136 million descriptions of archival records, nearly 900,000 newspaper pages and also the addresses of more than 3000 historical settings or web sites.

IRELAND - ARCHIVES - BEYOND 2022
Beyond 2022 rebuilding the archives from 1922. The project aims to digitally recreate what was destroyed during the June 1922 fire of the Public Records Office of Ireland in Dublin and making it available for the public on the centenary of the event in 2022. Flames and heat consumed seven centuries of Ireland’s recorded history, stored in a  repository known as the Record Treasury. Check the Beyond 2022 website for more details.

IRELAND - IRELAND GENEALOGY PROJECTS ARCHIVES
The site is arranged by county and within each county by cemetery records, church records, census, census substitutes, court, directories, headstones, land, military and constabulary, newspaper, miscellaneous, obituaries, photos, vital records and wills.

IRELAND - IRISH ARCHIVE COLLECTION
The Irish Archives Resource site brings together a large number of collections from around the country. It includes records from government agencies, personal contributions, estate records, clubs, societies, trade unions, religious, cultural, sporting and political organisations. One notable collection includes deeds on properties in Cork city dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries.

IRELAND - NATIONAL ARCHIVES
National Archives Genealogy Website, you can now access the Census Records for 1901 and 1911, Census survivals for 1821-51, Census Search forms for 1841-51, the Tithe Applotment Books from 1823 to 1837, the Soldiers’ Wills from 1914 to 1917, and the Calendars of Wills and Administrations from 1858 to 1922.

IRELAND - NORTHERN IRELAND - PRONI
The Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) is the official archives for Northern Ireland.

MALTA - NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF MALTA
The National Archives has one of the largest archival collections in Malta, spanning from the 1530s up to the current day.

NETHERLANDS - ARCHIVES - WIE WAS WIE 

Research your family history, find historical records from the Dutch archives and view pedigrees and biographies created by other users. A large number of Dutch archive organisations took part in  Wie Was Wie by making their digitised collections available via one national portal.

NETHERLANDS - OPEN ARCHIVES

NETHERLANDS - THE PILGRIM ARCHIVES LEIDEN
The Pilgrim Archives Leiden gives a surprising look in a unique piece of Leiden history: the story of the Pilgrims. The Pilgrims were English Protestants, who fled England to escape the oppressive regime of James I and the Anglican established church. They lived and worked in Leiden from 1609 to 1620.


NEW ZEALAND ARCHIVES

Archives New Zealand holds more than 100 kilometres of archives, including documents, maps, plans, films, artworks and photographs. These were created by the New Zealand government and document nearly 200 years of New Zealand history.

Archives New Zealand's system for documenting government records. Use Archway to search for probate and other records.

NEW ZEALAND ARCHIVES - PROBATE RECORDS 1843 - 1998
Images and index for probate records from the Archives New Zealand now on family search. The records were created by various courts throughout New Zealand. Although the index will contain entries up through 1998 when all images have been captured, the images for probates issued during the past 50 years are still unavailable for viewing. The original records are located in the New Zealand Archives.

NORWAY - NATIONAL ARCHIVES
The National Archives have an extensive online digital archive including database collections, tables, transcripts and images relating to family research.

NORWAY - NORWEGIN DIGITAL ARCHIVES
The Digital Archives is a public service from the National Archives of Norway. Here you can search in the transcribed source material for free. This is the old website for National Archives of Norway.

POLAND - POLISH ARCHIVES
The official website for archives in Poland in English. Due to border changes, some archives of areas formerly of Russia are in Poland.

SCOTLAND - ABERDEEN CITY AND ABERDEENSHIRE ARCHIVES
Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Archives exist to collect and preserve historical records relating to the City of Aberdeen and its locality and to secure significant modern records for future generations.

SCOTLAND - FRIENDS OF DUNDEE CITY ARCHIVES
FDCA established in 1989 to support the work of the archivists in Dundee. The site contains many quick links to the photographs, maps, maritime, graveyards, churches, transport, directories, WW1 records, industry, poorhouses, burgh records, education, people and places of Dundee.

SCOTLAND - NATIONAL RECORDS OF SCOTLAND
National Records of Scotland (NRS) is a non-ministerial department of the Scottish Government. The purpose of NRS is to collect, preserve and produce information about Scotland's people and history and make it available to inform current and future generations.

SCOTLAND - SCOTTISH ARCHIVES FOR SCHOOLS
The site is part of the National Scotland Archives education for schools and teachers, but it is of great value also to the family historian for Scotland’s history, heritage and culture. The archives have collections of documents dating from the 12th to the 21st century.

SCOTLAND - SCOTTISH JEWISH ARCHIVES CENTRE
The Archives Centre encourages awareness of Jewish history in Scotland, providing a research facility and an educational resource. The Archives Centre has collected material relating to the Jewish experience in Scotland since the 1700s.

SCOTLAND - PERTH AND KINROSS
The archives and local history collections of Perth and Kinross date back to the 12th century and include manuscripts, books, pamphlets, photographs, maps, plans, film and sound recordings. These unique collections are preserved, conserve, digitise and catalogue, making them freely available to the public.

SCOTLAND - SCOTTISH ARCHIVE NETWORK
The Scottish Archive Network is a project whose partners are the National Archives of Scotland (NAS), the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), and the Genealogical Society of Utah (GSU). The project aims to revolutionise access to Scotland's archives by providing a single electronic catalogue to the holdings of more than 50 Scottish archives.

SCOTLAND - SCOTTISH CATHOLIC ARCHIVES
Details the parishes for which the Scottish Catholic Archives holds sacramental registers (baptisms, confirmations, marriages etc). You can request a search by completing the parish register search form.

SOUTH AFRICA - NATIONAL ARCHIVES AND RECORDS SERVICE
National Archives and Records Service; the proper management and care of the records of governmental bodies; and the preservation and use of a national archival heritage; and to provide for matters connected therewith. SWEDEN - SWEDISH NATIONAL ARCHIVES
All digital collections at the Swedish National Archives are free to search and view. You will find more than 65.5 million digitised archival records in the Digital Research Room.

UNITED STATES - ARCHIVES
Search 4.3 billion records includes photos, US censuses, vital records, old newspapers in the United States, and some in the United Kingdom. The Help Center answers basic questions about searches and account information. UNITED STATES - GJENVICK GJONVIK ARCHIVES
The G G Archives offer access to 10,000 plus documents and photographs, including passenger lists to America, original immigrant passage contracts, steamship brochures and other family history materials.

UNITED STATES - NATIONAL ARCHIVES
This section of the US National Archives contains more than 50 million searchable records for civilians (including vast immigration records), military personnel, prisoners of war.

UNITED STATES - NATIONAL ARCHIVES
US repository for most federal military, census, immigration and other records. Read excellent descriptions of these record sets and order copies online. Some have been digitized or indexed; click on Online Research Tools, then Access to Archival Databases or Records Digitized by Partners. At the first, find databases to selected records at the National Archives. At the second, find a list (by microfilm number) of records now on Ancestry.com and Fold3.com.

UKRAINE - ARCHIVES OF UKRAINE
Search the official website for archives in Ukraine for your ancestors.

WALES - NATIONAL ARCHIVES
Search the Wales archives for your Welsh ancestors. The online catalogue allows you with a single search to obtain information about more than 7,000 collections of historical records in the holdings of 21 archives in Wales.

WORLD - THE INTERNET ARCHIVE
The Internet Archive is an independent and non-profit website that was founded by Brewster Kahle. The aim is to build an Internet Library Collection for the purposes of offering permanent access for researchers, historians, scholars, people with disabilities, and the general public to historical collections that exist in digital format.

The parish registers contain information on births, baptisms, confirmations, marriages, deaths and burials of people who were associated with the Lutheran Church in Australia. To assist researchers a Church Records Computer Database Index has been prepared. A printout of the surname provides the researcher with an index to entries with that surname in the parish registers. This enables the researcher to quickly locate those records which may be useful.

Nudgee Cemetery is owned and operated by the Corporation of the Trustees of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Brisbane. A common misunderstanding is that you must be a Catholic to be buried at Nudgee Cemetery. Anyone, regardless of their religious beliefs, is able to be buried at Nudgee Cemetery.

There were 13 female factories within Tasmania and NSW - Parramatta (2), Bathurst, Newcastle, Port Macquarie, Moreton Bay (2), Hobart Town, Georgetown, Cascades, Launceston and Ross. The experience in the factories varied according to when the women were in the factory and which factory they were in. The women within these factories produced spun wool and flax.

Child migration from England to Australia. Thousands of parents were persuaded to sign over legal guardianship of their children to Fairbridge Farm School. Two developers, Dan Vanderkam and Raven Keller, had the brilliant idea to take all the old photographs from the San Francisco Historical Photograph Collection and put them on an interactive map. This map functions similarly to Google Street View, except for when you zoom in on a particular place it gives you photos from as far back as 1850.The project, lets you manipulate a slider to change the range of years (it goes from 1850 all the way up to 2000). The pair have geocoded about 13,000 images.

During World War One nearly 7000 so-called ‘enemy aliens’ were interned in camps in New South Wales. One was young Bavarian photographer Paul Dubotzki whose remarkable photographs record the experience of internment from 1915 to 1919. Holsworthy at Liverpool was one of these camps.

The website lists 1,410 civilians from the Greater Manchester District known to have been killed during the various air raids of WWII. This figure includes the 44 unidentified bodies buried in the three Greater Manchester Communal Civilian Graves in:- Stretford Cemetery (17); Manchester (Southern) Cemetery (14) and Salford (Agecroft) Cemetery (13). "Blitz" being a generic title and includes ALL civilian deaths from the "Manchester Blitz" of Christmas 1940, the spasmodic bombing raids, before and after, up to and including the two V1 Flying Bomb incidents of Christmas 1944.

The Military Archives has been the official place of deposit for records of the Defence Forces, the Department of Defence and the Army Pensions Board since 1990. Some of the earliest collections preserved by the Historical Section include the Collins Papers, Civil War Operations and Intelligence files and Captured Documents (Civil War up to 1925), which continue to be made available today.
